We’re launching the brand new Sukie collection of ceramics in just one week now! It will be the Animal Folk range full of curious, friendly forest creatures… bear, owl, cat, racoon, dog, squirrel, fox and wolf. We told you a lot about Sukie as a brand last week in our blog (see here if you missed it) but this week we’ve got plenty of interesting information about the two people behind the brand. Darrell and Julia, masterminds of Sukie, are both designers and illustrators and here’s what they’ve got to say…

Tell us about yourselves as children…where did you grow up? What did you like as children?

Darrell grew up in Hertfordshire and as a young child liked creepy crawlies and playing with matches! I also loved making models and painting fantasy figures! Julia grew up in NW London and spent her days drawing, typing stories on an old typewriter and making useful items out of sellotape and paper such as shoes, pencil cases and dolls houses complete with furniture & fimo characters.

Did you always know you wanted to be designers? Did you go to university to do something arty?

We meet at the University of Brighton where we were both studying for a BA in Illustration. Darrell then went on to do an MA at the Royal College of Art.

What about now… where do live, who with and what sort of property?

We live just outside Eastbourne on the south coast, from our house, built in the 1930’s, we have a beautiful view of the South Downs National Park.

What do you like to do out of work?

Being where we are is fantastic for family walks over the downs with our 3 children & labradoodle and we are only 10 minutes from a beautiful beach, perfect for rockpooling. We also love going to flea markets whenever we get a chance.

Tell us one thing that we didn’t know about you that’s pretty interesting…

The name Sukie comes from Julia’s childhood pet cat.

If you have any questions for Darrell and Julia then let us know 🙂
