At 9:30 am this coming Sunday morning (6th of June), Earls Court will open its doors for the Pulse 2010 Exhibition. It is an event which hosts some of the most inspirational and leading names in contemporary design from the UK and around the world.

For some businesses and individuals it provides a launch pad for cutting-edge design and natural talent, but is an equally beneficial event for established British design. There are thousands of new product launches coming from over 500 top exhibitors many of which may not yet be on the high street. You can also find the brightest retail knowledge in a comprehensive seminar programme to help you get ahead of competitors. It really is a fantastic event to gain an understanding of what’s out on the market, what’s on its way there and what the general styles and themes are.

The event, which runs from Sunday 6th of June to Tuesday 8th of June, is a trade event. This means that you need to be able to prove you are a part of the retail trade so don’t forgot those business cards because spot checks are carried out at the event.

If you are considering going to Pulse 2010 but haven’t quite made up your mind to remember that if you are not pre-registered you will have to pay £20 entrance fee, so it really is worth signing up, even if you’re not sure.

Make International will be displaying all our product ranges and there will be some brand new products so it really is exciting for us. Keith Brymer Jones and the Word Range, Rachel Barker’s Scuba Range, the Fifties collection, the Baby range, the Heart and Star range and the Blunt project will all be there. Our ranges highlight some wonderful British design and designer led gifts which we can’t wait to share with you.

As the only London show in the summer, Pulse provides a unique opportunity to discover the brightest, profit-making products from British and international companies that you will not find at any other show in London this summer.

Make International will be based on Stand H – 24 and we look forward to seeing you there!

summer time, and to help everyone get excited we are offering everyone 10% of
all our products for the remainder of May.

Somehow the public manages to confuse Spring with Summer
every few years and after a harsh winter, that has been the case in 2010.

In recent months there has been tremendous support for us on
Twitter and we really do appreciate it. Everyone who follows us and reads our blog, we
would like to say a big thank you and we hope you have enjoyed and continue to
enjoy what we do. In return for everyone’s kindness we are offering a 10%
discount on all our products up until the end of May!

To make use of the discount you can shop at Make
International as per usual. When you have finished filling your basket and
clicked on the “Trolley & checkout” there is an empty field to fill in,
above which is written “Redeem your vouchers here”. If you enter the phrase tw33t and you will see a 10% discount applied to the products.

At the moment we have over 500 followers and the number
keeps growing. Being pottery enthusiasts we are always keen to share
interesting information regarding the industry. We also try to keep our
customers up to date with the various exhibitions we attend and the awards we
are nominated for, with the most recent being the Keith Brymer Jones ‘Egg cup
set: What came first the chicken or the egg” for “Gift of the year” by The
Giftware Association.

Our “Bird Flowers” mug range was also featured in Concept
for Living magazine, which described it as “Adding a lively touch to the table
and available in a colour series of four, each mug is presented in a designed
gift box and priced at £5.99.” or if you’re smart and use the Twitter discount
£5.40!

The Make International website displays over one hundred and
thirty high quality handmade pottery products. The products have drawn
inspiration from all kinds of sources and there is a range of styles available.
Every house needs tableware and just about everything can be found on the
website ranging from mugs and cups, jugs, bowls, plates, table accessories and
even some bathroom items.

The range of products and styles available at Make
International gives customers an opportunity to have the dining set they have
always wanted. Some the products are also a bit “tongue and check” for example
the daddy gorilla mug, which makes a great father’s day gift, or even the barcode
mug “work is hell”.

Potfest in the Park - The pottery fanatics paradise!

We are now in May which typically signals the start of the summer season. Some might say this is premature and far too overambitious. Perhaps it is, but fingers crossed it starts now.

Summertime’s in the UK have become pretty special. Families, couples and friends flock to beaches and parks all over the country. All we really want is the opportunity to feel like we are slap bang in the middle of the Mediterranean.

We have also rekindled somewhat of an obsession with Festivals. Live music really has become the staple of summer entertainment. Festivals like Glastonbury, T in the Park, Isle of Wight and Reading to name but some will entertain hundreds of thousands people in the UK. There are also thousands who will travel to Europe and even further to get their fix of their favourite band.

However, the summertime is also an opportunity for fanatics of arts other than music and exhibitions will be on show everywhere. If you so happen to be a fan or collector of tableware pottery or ceramics we have just the event to recommend for you – Potfest in the Park.

There will be over 100 exhibitors invited from all over Europe and beyond, all with very distinctive individual styles, all passionate about working with clay.

The venue, Hutton-in-the-Forest, is a cultural destination in itself with its walled garden, topiary terraces and woodland walks. The homeware ceramics and pottery festival takes place in and around marquees in front of the castle, with the potters competition pieces on the lawn, next to ancient architecture and modern ceramics.

Hutton-in-the-Forest lies 5 miles northwest of Penrith, Cumbria on the edge of the stunningly beautiful Lake District National Park, which is well worth a visit itself.

Each year a special tent is dedicated to a different Continental
pottery town. Last year 6 potters from Hohr-Grenzhausen in Germany were
invited. This year's special guests are from the association des
Potiers Createurs de Puisaye from St Amand-en-Puisaye in central France.

The Hohr-Grenzhausen area was famous for its salt glazed stoneware
whereas t he Puisaye region sits on a vast bed of stoneware clay and is
in a heavily wooded area - hence the predominence of wood-fired
stoneware.
For pottery enthusiasts this is the perfect festival in an area of
incredible natural beauty.

The Lake Distric National Park is arguably
the finest piece of natural beauty in the UK, the perfect venue to
display some of the finest pottery and ceramics the UK and Europe has
to offer.

Potfest
        in the Park 2010 - July 30th /31st /August 1st
Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday ...10am - 5pm daily

Adults
        £5. Accompanied children free.
        Free parking

Please
be aware that many of the exhibitors are unable to process credit card
transactions, and the nearest cash machines are six miles away in Penrith.

Egg cups make it to the shortlist for Gift of the year!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that one of our products has been shortlisted as a potential winner of The Giftware Association Gift of the year.

The egg cups are beautifully designed by Keith Brymer Jones and forms part of the extensive ‘The Word range’, which has a very clean and relatively minimalist design throughout.

Having a set of egg cups which are always asking the question ‘What came first, the chicken or the egg’ will always make yours breakfast thought provoking. But equally important is the functionality of the egg cup, because if you have ever tried to eat toasted soldiers without an egg cup it is a nightmare, and a guaranteed way to ruin your morning eggs.

For some however the business of egg cups is a very serious matter. The humble egg cup is actually a collectible item which has its own term – Pocillovy – which derives from the Latin pocillum for small cup and ovi for eggs.

There are newsletters for egg cup collectors from "Eggcup Collectors' Corner" in the U.S. and, "Egg Cup International Club" in UK. There are also egg cup conventions for collectors here in the UK, with some antique egg cups being valued and going on to sell at auction for hundreds of pounds.

There may be a good explanation as to why there is such a fondness for egg cups around the world. Many children growing up are introduced to something we call ‘toasted soldiers’. If you are not sure what that is, the picture should answer your questions.

Hopefully it is clear that eating this meal as a child was great fun and if you think back you might even remember the very egg cup you used as a child, which is why many associate egg cups with childhoods.

In addition, egg cups actually go way back! An early silver egg cup was found in the ruins of Pompeii! In Europe, the egg cup has been used since at least the 15th century as part of breakfast, which technically makes it much older than the ‘full English breakfast’, which is actually heavily influenced by America and really exploded in popularity after the Second World War.

Healthy junk food does exist!

At a young age, we learn that to grow up big and strong you have to eat your greens. Turns out pop-eye was right all along!

Unfortunately, for many people there is no pleasure in doing this whatsoever, which means it doesn’t happen, even if you have to bribe your own children with gifts it can still be tough!

However what if we told you that there is food out there which you might typically categorize as junk food, but is in fact healthy! And hopefully the kids won’t smash the designer tableware in disappointment.

In all seriousness, the following foods are not bad for you!

1) Popcorn

This humble cinema snack could prevent cancer and help dieters.

A study presented last August to the American Chemical Society suggests the real health benefits could lie more in its ‘surprisingly large’ polyphenol content, antioxidants thought to mop up free radicals, the potentially damaging chemicals that cause diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Next time you are sat at home watching a DVD with your big bowl of homemade popcorn, enjoy it. After all it’s healthy!

WARNING: You will immediately negate any health benefit of popcorn by overloading with salt or sugar!

2) Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is one of the richest sources of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. It’s also low in saturated fat and an excellent source of protein to keep you feeling full for longer, fibre for bowel health and foliate which can protect against colon cancer and heart disease.

The nuts are thought to help reduce inflammation in the body and boost the health of blood vessels around the heart. In fact, Harvard Medical School researchers recently reported that snacking on peanut butter five days a week can nearly halve the risk of a heart attack.

3) Baked Beans

For many British people Heinz Baked Bean is a national institution. They were first launched in 1886 and have been with us ever since. They are a key element of a traditional English fry up and other dishes such as baked potato and beans.

The humble baked bean is a nutritional powerhouse of protein, fibre, iron and calcium. Its combination of high protein, which also keeps your muscles and bones healthy, and low-GI carbohydrates, which release their energy slowly, keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Tinned baked beans can be quite high in sugar and fat so we recommend that you choose the low sugar, low salt varieties.

4) Russet Potatoes

A Russet potato contains more potassium than a banana, which helps prevent high blood pressure, is a great source of soluble fibre which helps maintain bowel and heart health, and has no fat or cholesterol. In fact, one baked, medium Russet has only 135 calories and around a fifth of your recommended daily intake of protein and fibre.

A U.S. study which compared the antioxidant content of fruits and vegetables found that the Russet potato had a total antioxidant capacity of 13.2, ranking higher than carrot, kiwi, watermelon, cantaloupe, radish and even tomato.

Frying the potatoes or drowning them in butter or cream will not do you any favours. Boiled, mashed, or roasted is your best bet.

5) Pork Scratching

The bar snack we all want to have but are too embarrassed to ask for is actually packed with goodness.

Two-thirds of all its fat is actually mono and polyunsaturated fats, beneficial for heart health, with 13 per cent of its fat coming from stearic acid, a type of saturated fat that doesn’t raise cholesterol levels.

One 20g bag contains 2g more protein than an egg, or about a fifth of your recommended daily allowance. They also have very little sugar and just 0.3g carbohydrates in a packet.

The main health concern is its salt content, so moderate your consumption.

6) Nutella

Mum and Dad, you can now feed your child Nutella with a clear conscious because it contains lecithin, a soy extract that is high in protein, calcium and iron, protecting your bones, boosting energy and helping you feel full for longer, says dietician Dr Sonia Kakar.

‘It’s also lower in calories than many jams, is lower-Gi for slower-release energy and contains calcium from skimmed milk for healthy bones.’

‘Nutella is high in sugar and fat, so intake should be moderated,’ Dr Kakar says

7) Cheddar Cheese

Cheese provides 25 per cent of the calcium in the British diet, according to the British nutrition Foundation.

Cheddar also contains a large amount of other essential nutrients such as phosphorous for strong teeth and bones, zinc for healthy skin, a strong immune system and fertility, riboflavin and vitamin B12 for energy and vitamin A for healthy skin and eyes.

A cube of cheddar after a meal will neutralise the acids in your mouth and increase saliva production to aid food clearance, both of which help prevent tooth decay.

But its high fat content means eat in moderation.

How to repair chipped or cracked Porcelain

If you are considering throwing out that gorgeous
porcelain vase or any other tableware because of its chips and cracks, don’t!
Many porcelain problems can be easily repaired at home with an epoxy glue or
porcelain enamel to match the piece.

Things
you’ll need:

Porcelain enamel kit

Ice lolly stick

Rice

Plastic cup

Small brush

Toothpick or cotton swab

Epoxy glue

Large basin

Hair Dryer

Instructions

Step 1 - If the porcelain is wet, dry the
surface thoroughly with a hair dryer

Step 2 - Following
the package's directions, mix the 2 parts of epoxy glue (it comes in a kit with
2 tubes) in the tray that's included or in a disposable cup. Then follow these
steps, as appropriate:

For Chips

Step 1 -
Apply the epoxy glue to the back of the chipped piece using a toothpick or
cotton swab

Step 2 - Place the piece in its original position,
taking care to line up the broken edges

Step 3 – Hold piece in
place for thirty seconds

For
Cracks

Step 1 - Apply porcelain enamel over the cracked area with a small
brush, a toothpick or an eye-shadow applicator until the crack is filled. You
can buy porcelain enamel kits at art supply stores

Step 2 - Smooth the
surface with and ice lolly stick

Step 3 – Let it dry for
24 hours

Step 4 – One coat of enamel will leave an
uneven finish, so you’ll want to apply several coats

For
more serious damage

Step 1 - If the
item is broken into 2 or more pieces, set it in a large basin or box filled
with dry rice or beans after applying epoxy glue. The rice or beans will hold
the item in place while it dries.

Step 2 - If the porcelain is priceless,
hire a professional ceramic restorer to repair it. Ask for a reference at an
antiques shop or search the yellow pages or Internet under "ceramic"
or "antique repair and restoration."

Step 3 - If your porcelain treasure is
beyond repair, consider giving it new life as a mosaic. Use your treasured
porcelain pieces to mosaic a picture frame, a
mirror or an outdoor tile. Visit an art supply store to purchase mosaic
supplies.

2010 – A year for home improvement

Election uncertainty and talk of a double dip in the economy has done nothing to suppress the optimism of British home owners - according to a GB wide YouGov survey carried out this month, almost half of those homeowners surveyed revealed they are planning home investments in 2010.

Almost half of the home owner respondents 48% confirmed their intention to invest in their homes this year whilst over a third of those homeowners questioned 41% stated that adding value to their home would be the reason behind any home investments.

Jace Tyrrell of the New West End Company, which represents over 600 retailers on Bond, Oxford and Regent Street said that "Home retail took a hammering last year, with sales of furniture and home accessories falling off a cliff face for some retailers. Our survey highlights this, with 41% (excluding those that said "don't know") of homeowner respondents admitting to having put decorating and buying new furniture and tableware on hold due to the recession.

‘'2010 has shown some incredibly positive home sales and this survey of over 2,000 respondents from across the GB provided some startling results. However, despite the bullish results of the survey, retailers are very much aware that shoppers to the high street need to be wooed and given added value for every pound they spend.''

In the build up to the May Bank Holiday, the first ever West End Home Week is launching next week involving retailers such as Anthropologie, Debenhams, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Liberty, Marks and Spencer and Selfridges.

Shoppers to London's West End will enjoy a full week of discounts on homeware, exhibitions offering inspiration for budding home designers and exclusive in-store lectures by top home designers, who will advise on trends and valuable updates for the home.

Paul Mitchell, Store Manager at the Oxford Street, House of Fraser, stated that “As shoppers look to invest in their homes over the coming year, we want to respond to the current appetite for home design. West End Home Week is ideally timed to offers shoppers a fantastic selection of homeware, advice on how to improve their homes and inspiration for those looking to update''.

Other findings of the West End Home Week survey showed that 38% of the homeowners surveyed believe that renovating their bathroom will add the most financial value to their property. Others however argue that a loft conversion will add more value.

Dated beige bathroom sets and lino floor tiles are out, with homeowners realising a luxurious, modern bathroom can update the feel of the whole property and therefore provide more bang for their buck.

How to handle fine China

Fine dining has become incredibly popular thanks to celebrity chefs and a general shift in attitude towards food. Our reputation may be steeped in fish and chips, bacon butties, full English fry ups and pies, but nowadays it is more about blending continental ingredients and flavours with bold British character. It would seem that we are enjoying and care about food more than ever.

Having dinner parties and serving gourmet quality food is hugely rewarding and great fun. Many people will often break out the fine China for such occasions. Many people find having an everyday set of dinnerware and another set for such event easy to manage and the guests will certainly appreciate it.

Fine china is an investment that should last for years. Keeping your fine china looking new is just a matter of proper care and storage. With the right containers and plenty of space, your fine china will be maintained for passing down to future generations.

1) Handle china carefully. It is very delicate and will chip easily.

2) Locate a large area for china storage. This will make moving the china around easier.

3) Purchase china storage bags from any home supply store. The bags are usually made of soft cloth and have zippers to protect dishes from dust and scratches.

4) Cut out pieces of felt to place between plates. The felt should be slightly smaller than the circumference of each plate size. You can also use bubble wrap between plates, but felt is less cumbersome.

5) Stack plates inside storage bags with felt pieces in between. Keep same size plates together.

6) Do not stack plates more than 6 to 8 inches high, depending on the size of your bag.

7) Store cups, creamers, tea pots, sugar bowls and other pieces in a single level on a designated shelf. Invert lids for sugar and tea pots and place them on felt between the base and lid.

caption id="attachment_271" align="alignright" width="220" caption="Raymond Blanc"]

The age of celebrity chefs and dinner sets

It is hard to fully explain how far food and designer tableware in the UK has come in the last ten years. We are now well into the spring and the urge to eat outside increases as the weather slowly improves. For some the summer spells a busy time of ‘al fresco’ eating, regular barbeques and lots of sangria. The continent and the Mediterranean influence have never been stronger.

The UK has seems to be experiencing a food renaissance over recent years. People are eating in new ways and are much more experimental and adventurous. In addition many families now take the quality of the produce they use in their food very seriously. The bar has been raised and we should all be proud.

The celebrity chef

Much of the success can be attributed to some the world class chefs in the UK. People like Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver, Rick Stein, Delia Smith, Heston Blumenthal and programmes such as Master Chef and Hell’s kitchen have proved to be tremendous success.

Jamie Oliver in particular, could be argued to have improved the vast majority of children’s school lunches and therefore their health. Jamie is now attempting the Everest of all food challenges – showing America that there is more than fast food. By targeting and challenging the countries ‘fattest town’ he can demonstrate that anyone can change.

After some initial scepticism and doubt it would appear Jamie’s hard work has been rewarded with glowing reviews and topping the TV ratings in America. An estimated 7.5 million viewers tuned in to see Jamie on his crusade to encourage a more fulfilling diet.

The New York Times said the dad-of-three's stunts had resulted in "entertaining" and "engrossing television", while the Los Angeles Times said: "Oliver is eminently and instantly likable." There has also been further support by a host of American celebrities including Ryan Seacrest, Justin Bieber, Ricky Gervais and P Diddy, who have signed his petition for change.

It’s all about presentation

A dinnerware set is one of the most important things in a table setting because part of the food revolution has included the style and aesthetics of eating. They way food is placed on a plate has become an art in itself! The continental style is well and truly alive and well in the UK.

There is also much more attention on the style tableware used. For some the classical style is the only style, whilst others prefer the more modern minimalist style. Wherever you allegiances may be, you should know your purpose before buying good dinnerware sets.

These sets can be for everyday usage or for special occasions. It depends mainly on your lifestyle, from vintage, casual and contemporary such as Keith Brymer Jones, to formal styling.

Most families use casual dinnerware sets. This is has a casual look, having simple designs, colours or patterns. A casual dinnerware set has more functional style; it can resist chipping and it is dishwasher safe.

Fine China made with elegant design is best served for formal gatherings and dinner parties. It is still best to choose large setting for large gatherings to accommodate guests. Most formal sets are hand washed and stored with proper care.

Picasso is perhaps the most recognisable artist of the 20th century. His artwork has been hailed as totally groundbreaking and his pieces have reached astronomical values at auctions.

Thankfully Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughout his long lifetime. The total number of artworks he produced has been estimated at 50,000, comprising 1,885 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics, roughly 12,000 drawings, many thousands of prints, and numerous tapestries and rugs.

Collecting them is a way of having "a little piece of a great artist," says Christie's specialist India Phillips. On April 21, Christie's South Kensington will include more than 50 ceramic works by Picasso in an Impressionist and Modern Art sale.

His ceramic range estimates from £800 £22,000, a far cry from his painting estimates in coming auctions. Picasso's painting "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" (1924), for example, is expected to fetch around $80 million at Christie's on May 4 in New York. In London on June 23, Christie's will offer his "Portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto" (1903), valued at £30 million-£40 million.

Picasso became interested in ceramics after visiting a craft fair in 1946 at Vallauris in the south of France where he saw the works of the Madoura Pottery workshop. An enthusiastic Picasso was given his own space at Madoura where he produced over the years more than 3,000 objects (plates, bowls, vases, figures and painted tiles) that are full of wit and his favourite themes (faces, animals and bull fights). Hundreds were made into editions.

All the works in the sale feature Picasso's stamp, mark or signature. This is important as there are plenty of fakes around. A plate decorated with the head of a donkey from 1950 in an edition of 60 is estimated at £800-£1,200; a wide-eyed Aztec vase with four faces from 1957 in an edition of 50, at £15,000-£20,000; and a unique glazed tile with a mischievous faun, at £18,000-£22,000.

Prints are another way of getting an affordable piece of Picasso. At the 25th London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy from April 29-May 3, dealer Frederick Mulder will bring 25 Picasso linocuts priced from £250 to £25,000.

Rising gas prices hit pottery industry

Make International is disappointed to hear that jobs are being put at risk in the resurgent ceramics industry by energy companies hardening their stance and demanding companies pay for their gas in advance.
The pottery industry, whose spiritual home is Stoke-on-Trent, has been among the hardest hit by a change in practices by some energy firms brought in response to the rise in insolvencies and the withdrawal of credit insurance that hit the sector during the downturn.

Ceramics firms have a huge demand for gas to fire their products, which coupled with the fact that the industry was last year hit hard by the recession, has left nervous energy companies seeking to cover their backs by demanding upfront payments.

But even successful firms with strong trading histories, growing profits and ambitious investment plans have been caught up in the trend, just as the economy improves and the industry is starting to emerge from a tough 2009 to return to profit again.
Stoke-on-Trent-based Wade Ceramics, which has just invested £7.5 million in a new plant, said their gas supplier had insisted last year on three months’ worth of payments up front – but the firm had managed to find a way around it by organising a letter of credit.

Laura Cohen, chief executive of the British Ceramic Confederation, said 21 of its 100 members had been affected by gas companies imposing tougher contracts.
“Some credit insurers cut cover almost overnight," she said. ‘‘As a result, several energy suppliers have been demanding deposits of, typically four months, regardless of credit-worthiness.
She said the British Ceramic Confederation had been keeping local MPs, as well relevant ministers like Ed Milliband and David Kidney informed of the dangers to the industry.

But she added: “Some energy suppliers are still not prepared to make anobjective assessment of credit risk and large cash sums are being tied up. Businesses and jobs are still at risk.”
Ms Cohen said the British Ceramic Confederation had negotiated with suppliers and credit insurers over the issue, and had shared their advice with its members as well as passing on the industry’s experience to other sectors via the Major Energy Users Council.
“

As a result, seven of the last eight cases have been resolved without a deposit – and the deposit agreed for the last company was only two weeks, which they were comfortable with. We know that this advice has saved several businesses.”

No radioactive material in Chinese ceramic tiles!

We are delighted to reassure the world that The Atomic Energy Council (AEC) yesterday dismissed claims about high radiation levels from substandard ceramics allegedly originating from China.
The Cabinet-level AEC said its regular checks have not found any evidence of high radiation levels from ceramic tiles available in Taiwan.

So if you do have a pottery collection which originates from Taiwan our advice is not panic or to call your call GP.
Local makers on Friday claimed that about 40 percent of the ceramic tiles on the Taiwan market are made in China, but imported via Vietnam or Indonesia. They told lawmakers that these China products are not tested, and may carry excessive levels of radiation.

But the AEC said it conducts random checks on ceramic tile products' radiation levels every quarter, but have found all tested items safe. They also added that the tile products are locally made or imported from such countries as Turkey, Spain, Thailand, Italy, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Some research has been conducted on this topic, but not much. The general feeling is that the exposures to the public from radioactive tiles are probably too low to worry about. The level of radioactivity in ceramic tiles varies tremendously. This means that the measurements made in one study would not necessarily apply to other situations.

The potential exposures from the radioactivity would depend to a large extent on an individual's proximity to the tiles as well as the length of the exposure period. In other words, there would be a great deal of guesswork required to interpret the measurements generated in a given study.

Ronaldo's pottery statues selling well in Barcelona!

Make International has learned of a group of people who make some very interesting pottery, which at first glance might strike you as a little bit strange, especially if you’re British and suffer from a stiff upper lip.
The hilarious little figurines, known as 'caganers', have been available in Barcelona since Christmas and are something of a festive tradition in the area.

Every year local craftsmen turn their hand to these sorts of creations, which date back to the 18th century, for Catalonians to give as gifts or hide as part of a game for friends.
The caganers are traditionally concealed within Christmas nativity scenes with guests invited to look for them, and they are said to symbolize fertilization, hope and prosperity for the coming year.

The Catalans have modified this tradition somewhat since the 1940s. In addition to the traditional caganer design, you can easily find other characters assuming the caganer position, such as nuns, devils, Santa Claus, celebrities, athletes, historical figures, politicians, Spanish royalty, and other famous people past and present. Just days after his election as US president in 2008, a "pooper" of Barack Obama was made available.

In 2005, the Barcelona city council provoked a public outcry by commissioning a nativity scene which did not include a Caganer. Many saw this as an attack on Catalan traditions.
The local government countered these criticisms by claiming that the Caganer was not included because a recent by-law had made public defecation and urination illegal, meaning that the Caganer was now setting a bad example.
Following a campaign against this decision called Salvem el caganer (Save the caganer), and widespread media criticism, the 2006 nativity restored the Cagane.

These little gems showing the former Manchester United player taking a little dump are continuing to shift off the shelves even now - presumably because it isn't the most flattering position for the figurehead of Barcelona’s bitter rivals Real Madrid and for others it brings hope of prosperity to the Catalonia club.

Watch out, Regent China is coming to a hotel near you

Make International has heard about a scandal involving a group of people with already tarnished backgrounds who are now continuing to bring a bad name to the world of pottery and fine china. Thankfully an undercover investigation has brought to light just how good people have been manipulated and tricked into wasting their money.

Delivering slick sales pitches held in hotels across the country Regent China Limited is offering an 84-piece porcelain dinner service set, apparently worth up to £14,000 offered for just one quid.
If you get an invitation, the first thing you need to know is Regent China is run by Laurent Le Du. The Second thing to do would be to throw the invitation away and if you are feeling particularly active feel free to report them to Trading Standards website.

Laurent Le Du previously ran Regency Porcelain, which was prosecuted last year by Surrey Trading Standards for failing to give their victims written notice of their cancellation rights.
The company was fined £1,000 and Le Du and co-director Jeremy Abitbol were each fined £2,000 and ordered to pay legal costs of £3,450 apiece. Regency Porcelain has gone into liquidation owing £225,000. From its ashes Regent China has risen and its cold-callers are already busy drumming up new business.

Enter salesman Xavier and assistant Vanessa. With a thick French accent, Xavier tries to convince the crowd that he represents a long-established porcelain firm based in the French china capital of Limoges, all of which is completely false.
Xavier said they would sell dinner sets for just £1 because this would generate "excellent publicity", assuming friends visit you, see your china and want a set themselves.

He focused on the fear you might not be one of the "lucky" ones. Only three couples would get a set for £1, the rest would be left with a bottle of French wine. "People who put their hands up stay with me for my big presents, people who don't I hope you will not be too disappointed but I have to eliminate you," he said.
"People who think sincerely and honestly that I have shown them beautiful objects this afternoon, put your hand up."
All hands shot up.

"Sincerely and honestly, if Limoges were to give you your complete dinner service for just £1... sincerely and honestly, those who think it would be excellent publicity for just £1, put your hand up."
Where is the catch you might ask? Well you will not be paying just a quid, you'll have to have your initials painted on every piece - cost £2,940.
"It's an investment, alors £2,940 is nothing for those who wish to build their heritage," said Xavier.

"People who think sincerely and honestly it will be a good idea if Limoges gives you your service for £1 to have your initials engraved on your service, put a hand up."
Then he whittled down the crowd - asking some to collect their wine and leave, presumably so those left would feel lucky. One "lucky" couple who did agree to buy a dinner set and then tried to cancel the following day.
They assumed there'd be no problem because Regent China, unlike the previous outfit, had given them written notice of their cancellation rights. But the company said work on their plates had already begun and so payment in full was due.
Our advice, sincerely and honestly, is to avoid these people like the plague.

End of Pottery classes in Poole

Make International understands that adult pottery students in Poole have become the latest victims of Learning and Skills Council cuts. We are sorry to hear that the weekly classes, which have run in the borough for over 25 years, will come to an end next week.
Tutor Kati Zombory-Moldovan has urged council education bosses to throw her students a lifeline, but Borough of Poole say they are unable to prioritise leisure courses.

Mrs Zombory-Moldovan, who counts elderly, disabled and full-time carers among her students, said: “These students help and support each other and are highly motivated. They pay a substantial fee to Poole’s adult learning services, as pottery is not subsidised by the Learning and Skills Council.”
The pottery teacher, who has 30 years experience, volunteered to take the class over to Bournemouth Adult Education Centre and run it privately, but this suggestion was deemed unworkable.
In a bid to drum up support for their cause, the students recently put on a two-day display of their work in Poole’s Dolphin Shopping Centre.

Mrs Zombory-Moldovan said: “Most of the learners are Poole council tax payers – they feel they are being let down by their council.”
Councillor Peter Adams, the Borough of Poole’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “We greatly regret the cancellation of the pottery courses at Oakdale but sadly a continued reduction in the amount of national funding for adult learning in Poole means the council can no longer continue to subsidise as many leisure courses as it would wish.
“We hope that the learners and tutors on the pottery course can find an alternative venue as soon as possible so they can continue in the future.”

Porcelain collection to fetch £20million at auction!

Make International is delighted to hear
about an upcoming auction of some very special and highly collectable
items. George and Mary Bloch purchased the first of the decorative
Chinese bottles in the 1980s and by the time Mr Bloch died last year
they had collected more than 1,700.

Such
is the magnitude of their collection, the finest in the world that the
boxes will be sold in ten auctions over a five year period. The first
sale in May includes 140 of the bottles and one box alone is set to
fetch £250,000.

The bottles, which range between one and four inches high and date
mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, come with small spoons.

They are hugely collectable because craftsmen of all techniques turned their hands to making them. Jade, glass, ivory, lacquer, porcelain, bronze, silver and stone were all materials used to create the bottles.

Snuff became popular in China during the early 17th century and
because of the warm climate it was kept in air tight bottles, unlike in
Britain where boxes were suitable. Production of the bottles was at its
height during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799).

Colin Sheaf, chairman of Bonhams Asia, said: “This is the world’s
largest and finest collection of snuff bottles. The Blochs started
buying at a very high level. It’s impossible to know how much they
would have paid for each of them originally, because there are so many.

“They started collecting in the mid-1980s, buying from auctions and
dealers and the whole collection is worth more than £20 million. We aim
to sell it in ten sales over five years. Until recently the Chinese
haven’t really been collecting snuff bottles.

“But hopefully the sales will entice a new generation of mainland
Chinese buyers. Until now the market has been dominated by Western
collectors often in the US. The lovely thing about collecting them is
that the whole range of craft industries is represented.”

This is an incredible story and not one that came easy. The number
of auctions, the searching high and low, bidding and rebidding tells us
that this couple were completely infatuated by these miniscule pieces
of porcelain, ceramics,
jade, glass and stone. It shows what great affect even the smallest of
objects can have on someone and how much we can appreciate the
incredible skill used to make such beautiful objects.

Pottery trade looking rosy

Make International understands that Portmeirion pottery has had
excellent results for 2009, which is encouraging for the UK’s pottery
industry as a whole, but what conclusions can we draw from this, if any?

Surely it proves that, given sound management and decision-making,
there is still a real future for manufacturing in the UK and
particularly North Staffordshire, despite competition from overseas
rivals with lower costs.

It demonstrates good cost control, allied with design flair and
craftsmanship is still a world beating proposition. Other companies,
honoured at last night’s Sentinel Business Awards, can provide similar inspiration.

Make International is always willing and keen to learn from others
success and mistakes. With the creativity and skill of Keith Brymer
Jones, quality products and good management, Make international is
emulating the best possible practices so our customers can enjoy their ceramic pottery products to their full potential.

In Portmeirion, Wade, Steelite, Dudson, Churchill and others, we
still have major international players, which have maintained a strong
presence in their traditional stronghold. But while companies such as
Portmeirion and Churchill do have some products manufactured abroad,
they have managed to avoid the same fate as Royal Doulton, which
shifted increasing volumes overseas.

Perhaps that is because the ill-fated Nile Street giant only paid
lip-service to its native workforce, while pursuing ever-lower
production costs, without a thought for quality and public image.

People abandoned Doulton because they valued the Potteries backstamp
and thought the Indonesian move devalued the product. It seems
management at Portmeirion understand the importance of what they have
and the value that others place on it.

MAKE International specialises in designer homeware, tableware, porcelain pottery, china pottery and all sorts of other ceramic pottery.

Getting started in ceramics and property

How to Get
Started

Most people get started in ceramics through a class in their
community. However, some study ceramics in higher education, and some are
completely self-taught. There are many excellent books and videotapes to
help you along, but there is no substitute for actually watching somebody do it
and being shown what you are doing right and wrong.

Wheel and
Hand building

There are two main areas of ceramics, hand building and wheel.
Most people think initially of wheel-thrown pottery, and think they need to
purchase a wheel before they can do anything. However, hand building can
be very creative and rewarding in its own right, and can be done with simple,
inexpensive tools. In fact, the main tool is an ordinary rolling
pin. If you really want a wheel, our advice is to buy one new.
There are always many more people looking for used wheels than there are used
wheels available, so it may take a very long time to find a used one. And
with a new wheel you can be certain it will be quiet, spin evenly, and make
your throwing more enjoyable.

Kilns

The next struggle often faced is obtaining use of a kiln to fire your
work. In fact, this is one of the reasons that many people enrol in
community courses, for access to a kiln. But in addition, there are often
local studios where you can fire by the piece or kiln load. Purchasing
your own kiln may be more of an option than you think. 7 cubic foot
electric kilns, about the minimum size a potter would want, can be had for a
little over a thousand dollars. Smaller kilns work well if you are
doing jewellery, figurines, etc. and are even less. For a few hundred
more you can automate the whole show; press one button and the whole firing
cycle is managed for you.

Non-Kiln
Options

Even if you cannot find a kiln, there are still ways to be involved in
ceramics. New clay bodies called polymer clays only require baking at
oven temperatures, and now there are some that only require air drying.

MAKE

Ancient lust on show in Paris

The latest show at Paris' Quai Branly museum comes with a warning for
visitors: "This exhibition of Moche ceramics
shows sexual acts of an explicit nature."

But the extraordinary and graphic testimonial of the ancient Moche
civilization of Peru isn't about physical pleasure or procreation, according to
the curator.

He says the sexual acts evoke the rituals that accompanied the death of
dignitaries, and the human sacrifices that went with them. They tell a story
about the power of the elite that he says has parallels with modern life.

"Sex, death and sacrifice in the Moche religion," which opened
this week and runs until May 23, brings to Europe for the first time 134 erotic
Moche ceramic pottery on loan from
the Larco Museum in Lima, Peru.

The Moche lived on what is now the northern coast of Peru between the
first and eighth centuries. The ancient Andean people belonged to one of the
first societies to organize itself in way that would be recognized as a state,
constructing cities with elaborate monuments and specialized centres for the
production of textiles, metal and ceramics.

Some of the ceramics are almost anatomical — the Moche artists have made
clear, often in minute detail, the nature of the acts they are depicting.

Both an anthropologist and an archaeologist, he says it’s only possible
to understand such a long-gone culture because "I eat the Moche, I sleep
the Moche, I talk to the Moche." It's a relationship that seems to be
working out for him "the Gods of the Moche seem to like me so they keep
letting me find stuff," he says.

Fifteen years ago he discovered the broken and sex-sated bones of male
warriors who'd lain for centuries in a massive sacrificial site. After the
first bodies were discovered, it took archaeologists several days to work out
what they had found, but the cut marks on the throats, on the vertebrae, on the
neck bones gave it away.

He also found outfits, textiles, and objects similar to those depicted
in the ceramics, after which "it's only a small step" to imagine them
performing the sexual rituals. Originally interpreted as evidence of a decadent
culture, Bourget says the sexual acts should be seen as a visual discourse on
the power of the Moche elite.

“It's a story that has parallels with modern debates from the burqa to
the death penalty. All state societies be they French, be they American, be
they any, are by definition violent systems," Bourget said.

MAKE

Ancient Egyptian pottery is returned home

Make International is sad to hear that Britain has sent some 25,000
ancient artefacts back to Egypt - some dating as far back as the Stone
Age. Speaking from a purely selfish perspective, having so many
wonderful ancient artefacts is a joy and privilege.

However if there were 25,000 British Roman ancient artefacts, including some of the rarest pottery and ceramics in the world, being held by Egypt, getting them back would be pretty high on the agenda.

The artefacts returned to Cairo aboard an Egyptian flight on
Wednesday, Egypt's culture minister Faruq Hosni said in a statement.
They include a stone axe that dates back 200,000 years as well as
pottery from the seventh millennium BC which bears the finger prints of
its producers, the ministry said.

Retrieving the items came after 'long negotiations' with the University of London, antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said.

Mr Hawass said the artefacts 'will constitute the foundation for a
collection from the (pre-dynastic) Naqada period, 'named after a
village in southern Egypt which represented 'one of the oldest centres
of civilisation in the world.'

They will be displayed at the Ahmed Fakhri Museum, currently under construction in Dakhla, an oasis in Egypt's western desert.

The latest recoveries bring to 31,000 the number of relics brought back to Egypt since 2002, Mr Hawass added.

The total number of ancient Egyptian artefacts in the UK is unknown.
But an educated guess would be, a lot more than 31,000. For well over a
hundred years Egypt has been has been a watering hole for
archaeologists and treasure hunters. In that time it is impossible to
say how much has been looted and where it ended up. All we can do is
hope that over time they find their way back to the academic community
where it can be studying and then enjoyed by the public in museums
around the world.

Saxon pottery found at Wisbech playground site

Make International understands that archaeologists have unearthed Saxon pottery at the site of a new adventure playground in Cambridgeshire.

Unfortunately
further details of the find have not been released but further
excavations will now take place at the site in Waterlees, Wisbech. We
can only hope that this will unearth more treasures!

The British Isles has large and diverse areas of clay that are suitable to make pottery and ceramics.
Broadly speaking, the area diagonally south of York and down to
Cheshire has in various places clay deposits that are close to the
surface. This enabled people from much, much earlier times and up to
the Viking period to dig clay for pottery without having to go too deep.

Clay
is very heavy, and difficult to dig out. The rest of Britain by and
large had to make do with 'costly' imports that could have come from a
few miles down the road, or possibly several days travel away. Their
only other alternatives were wooden vessels, or in other more remote
areas, 'soft' soap-stone containers.

The vast majority of the
early pottery though was simply made, probably within the village or on
the farm, using methods such as coiling or making thumb-pots. Later on,
as shown by excavated examples, there were specialist potters who made
wheel thrown pottery in towns. This was then sold by the potter, or
possibly by travelling merchants in the markets, although some pottery
would still be home produced.

A dig took place ahead of the £800,000 project, which will not be delayed by the discovery, Cambridgeshire County Council said.

Archaeologists
are expected to carry out more digs in the Roman Bank end of the site,
the opposite end to where construction is due to begin.

Waterlees
was identified as an area of "play deprivation" by the Department of
Children, Schools and Families, which has funded the playground.

MAKE International runs a successful internet store, specialising in designer homeware, tableware, porcelain pottery, china pottery and all sorts of other ceramic pottery.

Chinese China sells for £100k at Village Auction

Make International understands that a Chinese vase expected to fetch
£130 at auction has stunned experts by being sold for a staggering
£99,990. That is an increase of 222119%, which as far as investments go
is better than any stock broker will ever offer you, which demonstrates
that there is value in just about anything, even ceramics and homeware.

The 12-inch blue and white vase began the auction with a bid of €50
(£45) before two international antique collectors recognised the item as
an authentic imperial vase and embarked on a ferocious bidding war.

Spectators at the auction at the Sheppards Irish Auction House in
County Laios, Ireland, must have watched in complete and utter
astonishment as the battle became more intense before the vase was
eventually sold for €110,000 (£99,999).

Richard Peters, 48, who runs an antiques company in Kensington, was
the eventual buyer after outbidding a dealer who had flown in from
Beijing, China, for the auction.

Mr Peters, who is
adamant the vase was 'made for the personal collection of Emperor
Qianlong in the 18th century', said: 'I got a bargain!

'The vase had probably been looted from the Imperial Palace in Peing
by French, British or American soldiers sometime during the 19th
century.'

However, Mr Peters added that searching for genuine Chinese ceramics
was 'difficult because the market is filled with fakes and forgeries.'

Auctioneer Michael Sheppard said he was amazed when the vase sold for
1,000 times more than its original estimated value, explaning:
'Something like this happens once in a lifetime.'

Mr Sheppard added the sale was 'the highest figure ever achieved for
any item' during the 60-year history of Sheppards Irish Auction House.

The vase, decorated with banana and bamboo trees, had been in a
collection of Chinese ceramics inherited by an anonymous family living
in County Carlow.

The remainder of the collection is now expected to go on auction
later this year.

Cornish ceramics pottery eyes £100k Art Fund Prize

A small pottery is up against giants such as the Ashmolean Museum in
Oxford and Hampton Court Palace for a prize awarded to the most original
museum development of the last year.

Seven years ago The Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, was
"crumbling before our eyes", said its director, Julia Twomlow, and on
the verge of being sold off for housing.

Now it is one of 11 contenders shortlisted for the £100,000 Art Fund
Prize.

The small site was established by studio potter Bernard Leach in
1920, who worked there until his death in 1979, perfecting a popular
discipline that has its roots in the Arts & Crafts movement.

Mrs Twomlow said: "During that time
people from all over the world came here.

"It was the home of handmade studio pottery and became the Mecca for
that art form."

But the small site fell into disrepair following the death of his
third wife in the 1990s, she said. It was only thanks to a campaign led
by the Craft Potters Association and Sir Christopher Frayling, former
chairman of the Arts Council, that it was saved.

Now a £1.7 million restoration has been completed, turning it into a
gallery and working studio.

Mrs Twomlow thought the judges of the Art Fund Prize, chaired this
year by broadcaster Kirsty Young, liked that it was not just a museum.
"We are not trying to recreate what was done in the past. We are
originating new work in a heritage site."

Other contenders include Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum, which
reopened last autumn after a £60 million facelift; Hampton Court Palace,
for its programme of events and displays marking the 500th anniversary
of Henry VIII's accession to the throne; and the Natural History Museum,
for its new Darwin Centre.

The winner will be announced on June 30.

MAKE International runs

Ceramics drive revolution in fuel-cell technology

The world woke up to an energy revolution this week thanks to the
Arnie-backed launch of Bloom Energy, a firm based in Sunnyvale,
California, whose fuel cells rapidly gained huge publicity and created
much excitement.

What makes this particularly interesting is that the main material
which has led to this groundbreaking discovery is one that has been used
for hundreds of years, ceramics. When ceramic porcelain was
first discovered it was as impressive as a Bloom Energy fuel cell would
be to anyone today. This really was a groundbreaking discovery and
revolution in materials and the manufacturing of them into different
useful items such as pottery.

Solid technology

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

The technology that's causing such excitement looks unspectacular: a
chunk of ceramic. But such solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can
efficiently combine everyday fossil-fuel natural gas with oxygen from
the air – without burning – to generate electricity on a small scale.
That offers a way to meet a building's demand for power without losing
energy to heat and friction in a conventional power plant or to
transmission losses in a national grid.

Bloom claims its boxes can half a building's carbon footprint, a
figure backed up by many familiar with such fuel cells. They are
impressively compact, but so are most SOFCs. Inside is a chunk of
ceramic which acts as an electrolyte, allowing ions to transfer between
air and fuel, pushing power around an external circuit.

Temperature limbo

Ceres Power in Crawley, is another manufacturer of SOFC’s, but have
taken this a step further by reducing the temperature required SOFC’s,
thereby saving power . These operate below 600 °C, because they use an
electrolyte that works at lower temperatures than those used by Bloom.

That's low enough for the device to be held together with steel
welds. "That was a real 'Aha!' moment," says Peter Bance of Ceres. "We
don't rely on the ceramics for support – we can use steel."

A porous steel sheet at the cell's heart is printed with ultra-thin
layers of ceramic anode, electrolyte, and cathode. Home boilers powered
by the cells are cheap enough to begin rolling them out in their
thousands this year, the start of a four-year programme to install
37,500 in the homes of customers of the UK's biggest energy supplier,
British Gas. The technology could, says Bance, "almost make your
electricity bill disappear".

MAKE International runs a

World's first ceramics pottery was English

Johann Friedrich Böttger

Back
in 1682, Johann Friedrich Böttger was born to a family of German
goldsmiths and craftsmen working in the mints. Young Böttger was
brilliant and had a real aptitude for chemistry. This talent usually led
to a career as a pharmacist, and Böttger was soon apprenticed as such.
However, by the age of 19, Böttger's restless spirit had led him to
begin secretly exploring the much more exciting (and forbidden) field of
alchemy.

The breakthrough came on January 15, 1708. In testing varying ratios
of kaolin clay and alabaster, Böttger found three ratios that met the
parameters of a porcelain clay body. His
tiny test tiles were the very first European-produced porcelain
objects, or so we are led to believe.

Porcelain pottery could
have been made in Vauxhall decades before experts first thought after
scientists used state-of-the-art technology to re-examine two tiny jars
at Burghley House in Lincolnshire.

Experts from the British Museum found hard-paste porcelain ceramics in the make-up
of the Buckingham China pair at the grandiose Stamford mansion,
pre-dating the earliest known production in Germany by at least 25
years.

Stamford Burghley House

The
development casts doubt over the claim of Johann Friedrich Böttger, who
was imprisoned by King Augustus for failing to deliver on a promise to
turn metal into gold, to be the creator of Europe’s first porcelain.

Officials at the House said the discovery was as hypothetically
revelatory as hearing the American moon landing had been eclipsed by
Russian astronauts several years beforehand.

Research into the artefacts began in 1991, when inconclusive research
left Sotheby investigator Gordon Lang unable to prove his claim that
they were made of porcelain. A dissertation on the pieces by an American
student reopened interest in the delicate duo in 2007.

English Ceramic Circle published an in-depth report on them last
year, and former ECC President John Mallet said the truth behind the
treasures remained "complex".

"It is by no means certain that the second Duke of Buckingham was the
maker of the vases at Burghley and elsewhere, nor, if he was, that the
vases were made at his glassworks at Vauxhall, although the argument for
their production in England is quite strong."

MAKE International runs a

Prince to save historic pottery from closure

A charity led by the Prince of Wales has stepped in to try and save the UK's last working Victorian pottery from closure.

For more than 100 years artisans have been turning out sought-after Burleigh porcelain pottery
from the kilns of Middleport. But like other potteries in North
Staffordshire, which was once the centre of the world's ceramic
industry, it has been hit by the economic downturn and competition from
overseas.

This week creditors will consider an innovative rescue plan which it
is hoped could safeguard the future of the works. The Prince's
Regeneration Trust, with the help of a substantial grant from English
Heritage, has made an undisclosed offer to rescue the business and its
Grade II-listed building.

Burleigh's distinctive porcelain pottery
blue cups and saucers are made in much the same way as they were when
the works were built by its founders, William Leigh and Frederick
Rathbone Burgess, on the banks of the Trent and Mersey Canal in 1889.

The trust, whose president is the Prince of Wales, made its bid last
week to reassure the plant's 40 workers in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent,
after fears were raised about its future.

Under the rescue plan the building will be restored and turned into
a visitor attraction showcasing the region's heritage, and the pottery
will continue to operate as a business on the site. Creditors are due
to meet on 22 February to discuss the offer.

She said the rescue plan would ensure that creditors got back 90 per
cent of their money, as well as keeping vital craft skills alive and
guaranteeing that 10,000 pottery moulds, some of which date back 150
years, remain in Britain rather than being sold off and shipped abroad.
"We are absolutely delighted to have been able to put forward an offer
which not only preserves this hugely significant building, but also the
time-honoured techniques and crafts that have been used by generations
of potters and might have been lost forever," Ms Kerslake said.

Just as it was at the height of the British Empire, clay is still
processed on the premises and pounded by the original steam-driven
machinery, while much of the work is completed by hand.

At the height of its success in 1939, Burgess & Leigh, as it was
then, employed 500 workers. The company had been a pioneer in improving
the conditions of ceramic workers. It was one of the first potteries to
install baths and basins for its employees, earning Middleport the
title the "Model Pottery".

MAKE International runs a successful internet store, specialising in designer porcelain pottery, china pottery and all sorts of other ceramics pottery.

Corporate Promotional Gifts – People’s Favourite Gifts

Corporate
promotional gifts are the way to accomplish gaining more customers and
to make sure that they are happy and satisfied. There are many ways to
make this promotional campaign; they can put ads in newspapers,
magazines, TV, boards, or in the internet. Those are costly ways and
not all the companies can afford it. Another way that can suit all the
companies is by using promotional gifts.

There are many gift ideas to choose from, some are more expensive than the others. Some of the expensive corporate promotional gifts
can be electronics, watches, clocks, pens with brands, leather wallets,
and many others. Other affordable ideas can be: pens, umbrellas,
t-shirts, mugs,
caps, fridge magnets, calendars, calculators, business card holders,
folders, key chains, stress toys, coasters, computer accessories, and
mouse mats.

Make International
are specialised in making some of those gifts and they can help you
choose the gift that suits your needs and customise it with your
company’s name, logo, or print a picture of the product you want to
promote on the gift you choose. It can be a very easy process with the
right help. You can contact Make International and we will help you
choose the right gift or gifts you like.

There are many considerations to be taken when choosing corporate
promotional gifts. You need to consider the style of the gifts, the
size, the colours, and the quality. They should be with good quality in
order to last, with good size to help with distribution, and to have a
good price that suits your budget.

You can distribute those gifts to your family members, friends,
employees, customers, potential customers, or any audience you have as
a target for your campaign. You can distribute them in family
gatherings, in public or private events, in stores, or in malls.

That won’t be a hard job because no one would say no to a gift.

Corporate promotional gifts are one of the best and guaranteed ways
to gain more customers and to guarantee more visibility of your logo to
keep the product in the customer’s mind to buy it and use it. Make some
space at you budget for promotions because it’s as important as the
manufacturing. You want the whole world to know about your company and
products, so when you prepare your budget, keep a reasonable amount of
money for promotions in order to guarantee the continuity of your
business.

UK economy emerges from recession

Hearing that the economy has grown will have sent a warm rush of
blood through millions of people in the UK, especially those in the retail
or wholesale sector. However, much like our weather, the economy can
have a mind of its own and it has been made clear that the road to
significant economic growth will be a bumpy one.

Britain
emerged today from the longest recession in modern history, but the
economy grew by only 0.1 per cent between October and December — far
below expectations of a 0.4 per cent rebound.

The data brings to an end the UK's longest-ever recession, but the
minuscule size of the rise - lower than the 0.4 per cent predicted -
will raise fears the country could slip back into a 'double dip'
recession and heap further pressure on Gordon Brown.

The economy had previously contracted for six consecutive quarters -
the longest period since quarterly figures were first recorded in 1955.
There have been recent recovery signs - last week, UK unemployment fell
for the first time in 18 months.

Britain is the last big economy to emerge from a full-blown
downturn. The United States, Japan, China, Germany and France all
climbed out of recession in the third quarter, between July and
September, last year.
The main drivers of the minimal growth in the economy came from the
retail and motor sector, both of which have been propped up by
Government intervention.

Colin Ellis, European economist with Daiwa Capital Markets, said:
"These sectors will have been boosted by the pre-announced VAT rise in
January, and the car scrappage scheme — suggesting that, on an
underlying basis, the economy only stagnated at best."

It has raised fears over the strength of the recovery as the VAT
rise coupled with the dire weather this month are likely to have hurt
high street spending, and the scrappage scheme is scheduled to come to
an end soon.

In 2009 the economy fell by 4.8 per cent, the fastest pace of
decline in a single year for 88 years, and more than in any other
12-month period since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Britain has
been in recession for six quarters. The technical definition of a
recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The
International Monetary Fund (IMF) today revised up its figure for
British GDP growth from 0.9 per cent to 1.3 per cent for 2010, in line
with the Treasury's own forecast for 1.25 per cent growth this year.

However, it places the UK among the stragglers in the world economy,
with the US expected to grow by 2.7 per cent and Japan tipped to expand
by 1.7 per cent. French and German GDP will rise by 1.4 per cent and
1.5 per cent respectively in 2010, the IMF forecasts.

There is a rosier picture in 2011, with the IMF predicting that the
UK economy will grow by 2.7 per cent, up from a previous forecast of
2.5 per cent. But this falls far below the Treasury's forecast for 3.5
per cent growth, which has already attracted criticism from economists
for being too optimistic.

Howard Archer, the chief European and UK economist for IHS Global
Insight, said: "This is another desperately disappointing GDP release.
While the UK officially exited recession in the fourth quarter of 2009,
it could only crawl out.

"This reinforces our suspicion that recovery will be gradual and
prone to losses of momentum." It also added to the likelihood that the
Bank of England would keep interest rates at an historic low of 0.5 per
cent, at least until late this year.

Product of the week- mmmm chocolate

It may be warm now, but Autumn is approaching. Relax and prepare with a Keith Brymer Jones hot chocolate breakfast cup. Enjoy our product of the week and find below a recipe for hot chocolate to go with it. Or even just use it for ice cream. It makes a perfect little desert bowl.

Recipe for DECADENT HOT CHOCOLATE

This hot chocolate recipe calls for two different kinds of chocolate, and it's whipped frothy. The half and half cream makes for an extra rich cup of cocoa.

Ingredients:

1 cup milk

1 cup half and half

8 tsp sugar

1 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped

1 oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped

1 tbs brown sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla

Preparation:

Heat everything in a saucepan, except the vanilla, until chocolates melt and sugar dissolves. Pour half into a blender and mix until foamy. Return to the saucepan, and add vanilla. Stir briefly then serve.

If you like the chocolate breakfast cup why not have a chocolate Latte Mug and Bucket mug to go with. Or even a little more risque, a sex and chocolate mug (coming soon).

Complement the chocolate with a 'mum's favorite coffee mug' from the brand new fifties range.

All available through various stockists and our online website.

MAKE International's New Ranges

MAKE International, producers of innovative and contemporary new ranges, have just launched a new trade catalogue. The catalogue is available through the trade website and features all of MAKE's ten exclusive ranges.

Including the distinctive and popular 'Word' range, by Keith Brymer Jones. Other new ranges to come into stock shortly are 'Soda' and 'Scuba' by Rachel Barker.

Created with top-quality porcelain, the Soda and Scuba ranges are a breath of fresh air for all dining - from a country kitchen to idyllic al fresco entertaining.

Rachel Barker on the Soda range:

“We wanted to create the summery feel of al fresco dining. The blue bubble motif is scattered over a sky blue background and evokes just the right sparkling wine feel. The high white porcelain body is bright yet warm – which really fits the mood.”

Rachel has been designing and making ceramics for more than a decade and has recently unveiled a stunning textile range. MAKE International is thrilled to welcome Rachel on board to join their team of British designers including Keith Brymer Jones and Martin Wiscombe.

Rachel Barker on the Scuba range:

“With Scuba the shapes came first. We wanted to create a range that is simple and practical but that looks great as statement pieces at a dinner table.

“Serpentine bands of blue, accented with green and black contrast with bright white porcelain creating the feel of sun bleached coastlines.”

Other Ranges include the exciting new fifties range - a fantastic colourful collection which includes a wide selection of mugs, jugs and bowls. The fabulous designs come complete with a range of trendy 50s slogans from “wake up and smell the coffee” to “Mum’s favourite” – perfect as giftware or for fashionable retro kitchens.
